Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust: Sustainable Travel

KEY STEPS

To make the Medilink work, NUH took some key steps:

Audited travel options and assessed need
Worked with County Council to understand local transport issues and to secure funding and co-operation. Both the City Council and County Council were interested in increasing public transport and walking/cycling.
Reviewed stakeholder feedback to ensure that the initiative was effective

Improving knowledge and understanding. NUH hosted a conference attended by over 80 delegates, to share best practice and ideas.

Resource allocation – NUH is currently undertaking a complete transport audit and this data will help inform other improvements, annual reporting and bidding for additional funding

Funding sources

Funding was jointly sourced between the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and local government. For initial implementation in 2005, Nottingham City Council provided circa £1 million, and provided required infrastructure, printed information and marketing and promotion. The second phase of the project received additional funding from Nottingham City Council.
