What's in it for me?

Acting as a Good Corporate Citizen will help you and your organisation:

Achieve many health benefits for patients and populations – helping to tackle health inequalities and to move from treatment to prevention

Save money – through energy efficiency, waste reduction and careful use of resources

Engage with staff and the community, and lead by example

Contribute to UK climate change targets – 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050, compared to 1990 levels

Why the NHS?

Think of it this way. With its focus on health and wellbeing, the NHS has a head start in contributing to sustainable development. However, there is much more to be done.

  • The NHS employs 1.4 million people
  • It has an annual budget of over £100 billion
  • It has the largest property portfolio in Europe.

How the NHS behaves – as an employer, purchaser, manager of transport, energy, waste and water, as a landholder and commissioner of building work and as an influential partner in many communities – can make a huge difference to sustainability in the UK.

Who produced the Good Corporate Citizenship Assessment Model?

It was produced by the Sustainable Development Commission in 2006 with funding from the Department of Health, and later revised in 2009 in cooperation with the NHS Sustainable Development Unit.
